Did you know... Sunday, November 25 is Christ the King Sunday. (Advent starts "late" this year---not necessarily concurrent with Black Friday, which is not on the liturgical calendar!) What is Christ the King Sunday, and how did it start? It is not an ancient tradition. It was, in fact, started in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, and took place on the last Sunday of October ("coincidentally" the same day as Lutheran's Reformation Sunday, hmmmmm...). However, after Vatican II, it was moved to the last Sunday of the church year (the Sunday before Advent, which is the beginning of the new year). When the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship adopted the three-year Roman Lectionary in the late 1970s, they brought the Christ the King festival along with it. Until then, they had not observed this, ahem, Catholic holiday. But, since the observance was appropriately Biblical, it was adopted, with some revisions. After all, who doesn't love a good festival? What are we celebrating, anyway? Christ the King Sunday is the grand finale of Christ's Kingdom, the Day of Judgment, the Coming of Christ and the Kingdom and his eternal reign. More or less. Kingdoms on Earth come and go, but the Kingdom of God and of Christ is forever. Dave Stuck says he has some research to do about the symbolism of the new addition to our sanctuary, but he offers some history: "This was given to St. Peter by the Nelson family Scott & Diane (DuCommun) in loving memory of their parents the Rev. Norman & Gloria Nelson and brother, Paul. The Lamb of God symbol was from the altar of Calvary Lutheran Church in Ballard [Seattle], WA. The church was built during Rev. Nelson's pastorate there. When the church closed and was torn down, the 'lamb' was given to Gloria Nelson. Norm & Gloria retired in the late 90's to Tillamook and became members of St. Peter."
Can't do Sundays? You are invited to come to St Peter every Thursday evening at 6:00 PM for a time of worship. All are welcome!
